The New Jopo 3 - beauty or beast?

Here you go, the 3rd generation of Jopo with 3 gears. I must admit that the 2nd gen version from 2000 is way much cooler looking (well I ride an army green 2006 model like this . And we all agree on the fact the the og Jopo is the classic.

This time the designers have managed to come up with something that lacks the original feel and looks like a cheap copy. I don't mind the gears, they had version with 2 gears way back, but this just looks cheap. Like those foldable bikes for mariners...

And I also found out that all Jopos are made in Taiwan nowadays. Shiiiiet, at least mine was still manufactured in Hanko.

Just too bad they're mostly made by gurrls, so they concentrate more on the feminine side of life. If you're a chica in your twenties you could go fo' stuff like Fashion Overdose. That one is actually kinda cool, she's interviewing Annie and what kind of clothes Annie likes to wear - something you would expect from Anna Abreau perhaps, not Annie.

Kriton Ice Rink Bangers live on 28.3.

On saturday 28.3 the Kriton Boys will be spinning discs at the Jääpuisto That's gonna be literally a cool happening, 'cos the place is an ice rink , a bit like the Rockefeller Center in NYC.

Wikipedia tells us that "An ice rink is a frozen body of water where people can ice skate or play winter sports. Some of its uses include playing ice hockey, figure skating exhibitions and contests, and ice shows".

We hope that there won't be too much ice hockey going on as we start playing them records, 'cos we don't have no "we will rock you" or any other sport event standards in our vinyl bags.

It's gonna be an early start, we'll be there from 4pm to 6 pm, and we're gonna focus a lot on easy going reggae, and maybe some smooth hip hop sounds. A good way to start the evening before you head out to the Tres Bien-club later on.

Maybe we'll play some eski-chunes as well...

Not being an englishman, I cannot say what Marmite means to the peeps in UK. However I had to buy some Marmite for the first time in my life 'cos it just looked so appealing on the market shelf at one of these ethnic stores in Hakaniemi today (yah, maybe the british food culture is considered ethnic here, who knows). According to wikipedia it should have some umami qualities. Hmm. Let us see.

I'll probably dislike the taste of it, 'cos I don't even fancy any peanut butter or chocolate spreads on my toast. I'm all butter, jam, marmelade or cheese spread -man. Totally. No exceptions here. Unless the Marmite blows my mind .

Like I opened up here before:good reggae can come out of somewhere else than Jamaica. And today I got reminded that actually England is the home of many great reggae / reggae influenced artists. I mean Aswad, Black Roots, Musical Youth, Steel Pulse and such are great, but as I bought the "An England Story Compilation, Vol I" by Soul Jazz Recordings today I remembered all these cool toasters who showed the rich multicultural heritage of the britons.

This cool compilation brought back the sounds of Tenor Fly, Papa Levi, Top Cat, Freestylers, RaggaTwins, Tippa Irie and their mates. Check out this vid to feel the ragga of the 90's....

Beenie Man is coming to town

Good news for all reggae fans! Beenie Man is planning to come to play at the Ilosaarirock-festival on the 18th or 19th of July. He is mos def "the doctor" and "king of the dancehall"!

It's great to see him once again, 'cos he's had a looong career from 1981 single "Too Fancy" (he was 8 at the time). He's actually became a grandpa in december once his 17 year old daughter had a baby... But I guess he still can put on a good show.

The Future of the Music Industry Is Now


In case you missed it -- and you very well may have missed it, because it happened awfully quickly -- the Web has finally become a legitimate channel for the promotion and distribution of music, and the music industry is finally embracing this fact. Of course, this can be debated, since the Web also pretty much killed the record industry at the very same time.

This struck me while watching the Grammys this year. The award for Best Rap Album went to Lil Wayne. Wayne had the top-selling album of 2008, selling 2.88 million copies of "Tha Carter III," followed by Coldplay with 2.15 million. This is amazing in two distinct ways; first, because Lil Wayne built his reputation by giving away hundreds of hours of music through mix tapes and other online methods in order to establish a fan base, and followed it up with a whimsical array of beats and rhymes on a legitimate label release, netting the biggest, most ubiquitous album of the year. It's also amazing that for the very first time since tracking album sales started under the current model in 1991, the number-one album didn't clear 3 million copies.

The biggest single first week album sales record goes to 'N Sync (don't laugh), as they sold 2.4 million copies of "No Strings Attached" during its first week in 2000, but since then the numbers have fallen across the board. All that being said, way back in 2000 the music business was just plain different. When you bought an album, you were more than likely buying it for one single song -- or maybe a couple -- and the rest was filler. Nowadays, with iTunes leading the way for digital downloads, most artists are happy enough to sell singles. Artists like Smashing Pumpkins have been releasing single songs rather than albums, and in some cases they're giving them away (much like Hyundai's recent giveaway of the Smashing Pumpkins song in its TV spot during the Super Bowl).

What has finally happened is that some artists, if not their labels, are waking up to the idea that the Web can be used to hone their craft, build a fan base and promote their music. Lil Wayne gave away hours and hours of material for free, proving his own prolific status as a maniacal musician and allowing anyone who wanted to hear him to get a taste of his style. In doing so, he also perfected his craft and became a better artist by weeding through the process in public and inviting his fans to come along for the ride! By the time he was ready to put out another proper release, he'd become the self-proclaimed "best rapper alive" -- a title than can certainly be argued, but at least he makes a case for it.

Other artists focus on standard Web sites like MySpace music or their own official sites to get out their music. If you're established enough, you can do it, but it takes time and it takes effort and it takes a lot of arguing with the suits that still represent the labels. Artists like Pearl Jam (I couldn't go an entire article on music without mentioning them) are talking about emulating Radiohead and releasing their own music through their own sites. These levels of artists don't need a label anymore. The fan base is large and they have the wherewithal to get it done, so why not go this route?

This leaves the labels and the industry itself flailing a bit and testing out every new model under the sun (which is a good thing). They are testing paid downloads, subscription services, ad-supported streaming, ad-supported and ad-integrated P2P download services -- and in so doing, they're rewriting the rules for the future.
The rules for the future of the music industry are astonishingly simple:

• Rule #1: Make good music and leave the filler at home.
• Rule #2: Invite fans into the experience and build a stronger relationship with them.
• Rule #3: Utilize multiple revenue streams; it's not only about selling albums anymore.
• Rule #4: Have we mentioned make good music, and leave the filler at home?
• Rule #5: Shape your artists, or let them shape themselves publicly (Pearl Jam, U2 and Coldplay are just three examples of artists that took time to develop and are now some of the biggest acts in the world).

I must admit I hated when Weezy picked up the guitar last year I saw him playing live. I mean he was on a cocaine-filled Prince-wannabe trip and really tried to play that twanger and he sucked at it.

But his mission to make rock music continues... The song "Prom queen" is pretty amazing: weird drum sounds, a wack guitar lick and too much autotune and Lil Wayne's weird mixture of singing and talking (or rapping?). But it has a killer chorus that makes me wanna listen to this over and over again. Especially those neat pop-influenced vocal harmonies in the end. I guess this is what happens when a rapper starts doing rock. Well, it's a lot better than what happens when a rocker starts to rap.

Benny Hill Won't Climb Up Any Hill

All those who grew up in the 70's and 80's remember Benny Hill (RIP) and his Benny Hill Show-tv series. Ben Elton once denounced him as a "dirty old man, tearing the clothes off nubile girls" - which is not pretty far from the truth. But I liked the guy besides this or maybe because of it.

What we all remember particularly clearly is the closing scene when people used to chase Benny after he's done something stupid and this wack carneval/ circus music started playing. And now Elephant Man among others have recycled this thingy in a riddim called.... well hmmm, Benny Hill, what else? The Energy God is (as usual) acting hyper hyper active on his "No Ticcle".

Reggae outta....Netherlands?

I used to be a classic orthodox purist who thought that reggae could only come from Jamaica, period. But slowly I have warmed up to a lot of artists outside JA making killer tunes. For instance Alborosie (from Italy) and Collie Buddz (New Orleans/Bermuda) have blown my mind the last few years. Actually Collie's debut album is one of the best reggae albums to come out in five years.

I also have started to like the more adapted form of reggae that's also lyrically fully localized. I mean Jukka Poika, SCB, Nopsajalka & Raappana here in Finland are worth mentioning of course.

The latest one drop / roots influenced foreign artist that caught my attention is Ziggi (no, not an offspring of any of the Marleys). Ziggi was born in the Netherlands, which is is the Jamaica of the Europe, in some aspects like the tolerance for usage of soft drugs at least. Actually I guess Netherlands is more tolerant than any country in the world when it comes to the recreational use of sativa, but that's another story.

Ziggi has done Blaze it which uses Collie's Come Around riddim, the hotta redrum-anthem with Goodellas called Cry Murdah but I think that this song is the best reggae song for the moment:

This is not a science fiction novel, it’s for real. The big brother (not the tv-series) is watching you little weed farmers, herbalists & horticulturists, so beware. I’m not sure how often the Google’s satellite images are updated in different areas, but I guess Switzerland must be quite an important target for surveillance. Maybe someone had an interest in the secret manufacturing processes of the famous stinky cheeses and accidentally found this little ganja farmer’s secrect spot.

This is basic rap parody, like what Weird Al has done, but it fits and it's funny: "I make pretty good spaghetti sauce, mothef**a". Actually this guy is pretty good, although kinda x-rated and not too PC to begin with. Google him on the inner'web to find the more saucy stuff.

Viewdle blew my mind

This is so advanced tech stuff that it's not cutting edge it's pure bleeding edge . These Viedwle guys come from Ukraine and they have been developing this facial recognition and video search software within the army and university and it's mind blowing. They won the best start-up prize at the Le Web conference in Paris this week and the truly deserved it.

Viewdle has developed video search tools that previously needed supercomputers to run, but their apps run on regular pc's. Check out their demos on how you can search video material: their software can tell who's on the video, what the subject is and when it's been shot. It's still in some kinda beta version, but you'll get the picture. I guess these ukrainian nerd's are gonna be rich soon.

In the digital age if you want to be ahead and know what's coming up next on the music scene, you can't really rely on official charts and media. I mean, even the Billboards and such are good indicators of what's happening right now with the masses (album, single and even downloaded music sales) but it's the blogs where the action is. You might have build your own iGoogle or Netvibes account to follow the latest RSS-feeds of your favourite blogs, but here's a good site to see what the blogosphere is buzzing about: The Hypemachine

Obviously Hypemachine is not perfect, 'cos it don't have Kriton Music indexed :-), but it's a nice service though. Recently we've covered one out of three top artists with our posts about Kanye's fixed gear 'cos the most blogged ones for the time being are Kanye, Cut Copy and MGMT.

But let's fix that: Cut Copy really rocks and so does MGMT.

I really loved Jzzmeister's post about 'ye ole chicago house music. I've been in Paris for the last week, and I must say that I'm totally feeling the french house music and electro right now. Well you can't miss it here, 'cos even the upscale department stores like Galeries Lafayette play Justice & other as "elevator music". I'm kinda novice on the subject - I've got the obvious Daft Punk albums and Ed Banger compilations at home, but I haven't really gotten into the whole filter using aural pleasure as a genre.

OMG! Am I a SPAM BLOGGER?

I guess so, since Blogger seems to think that. The blog in case is fiilinc.blogspot.com, my personal blog where i post new thigs i've accomplished in the wonderful world of graphics (a.k.a. "piirtelen tikku-ukkoja"). Blogger has some sort of a auto-bot that goes through blogs and notices if they have SPAM BLOG type of qualities (whatever they may be) and right now they've spotted MY DEAR OLD BLOG with their all seeing eye. I'm scared, dude!

So now I just asked them to check it, so they'll see it's COMPLETELY HARMLESS. But how will i know if Blogger will approve it? After all, they may find my graphics "like just sooooo late 2007/early 2008" that they just can't compete with the illustrator hipsters of 2009. "Like soooo lame, this guy is still using gradient slides and photo grain textures". "Dude, we so HAVE TO kick this loser outta here!!"...

Many people have been talking about this for the past months, but I finally got my invite to Spotify and I'm pretty stoked as well.

If you haven't heard, it's the new thing, better than many "web radios" before, loads of free music streamed + nice user interface + a recommendation engine that helps you find new artists. What more can I say? I love it, hope it comes available to all users pretty soon

It's amazing

It might come as a surprise to many of you but our older blog post about Kanye West's trackbike is one of the biggest things that lures readers to our blog.

Besides obvious love for track bikes and fixie culture I think that Kanye is still a genius when it comes to making music. On the new album mr West is mos def overusing vocoder/autotune all too much. But for an example this one has a super simple but cool beat and a bit corny piano loop that kinda fits in perfectly with the lofi rapping. I just had to turn up my speakers when this was on air this morning. And Jeezy comes in just when u think the song is over. It's amazing.

It's official, Michael Jackon has now converted to Islam and has a new name, Mikaeel. He did not, however, dig the name first suggested to him, Mustafa.

Everything that is digital can be copied and distributed online quite easily, we all know that. I went to SIME-conference last week and heard a few interesting presentations on the subject. I’m not gonna go too deeply into the stuff that the PirateBay guys had to say (yeah, they want it all for free and it’s fun doing that , that’s pretty much their political agenda), but I’d like to share some thoughts of Joi Ito.

Joi Ito is the CEO of Creative Commons and his point was simply that in the digital world copyright issues should be thought over. He was not only speaking pro free content but he had some good points on how different levels of copyrights could actually serve in marketing the artist/producer. This just calls for profound adjustments on the business model of the current music industry.

He had a good example of the Brazilian Tecnobrega-movement. The whole Technobrega-phenomenon is based on the fact that artists don’t get anything for their normal CD’s. The CD’s are sold as pirates or they are even given away for free. The artists are paid through concerts, sound system nights, t-shirts, special merchandise and such. Ito pointed out that in the Brazilian market it would be impossible to make a living selling CD’s ’cos no one would buy them from uknown artistst. And these unkonwn artists don’t get a single gig unless people know their material. By distributing cheap/free CD’s the artists gain more attention and are booked to better gigs. And once they get to be more famous, some people actually buy their special versions of their CD’s for really high prices, wanna wear t’shirts with the artists logos…

This is actually Long Tail Theory & Freeconomy mixed in real life: you give away free material to market your talent and then you make money selling specialized niche products for a good price. The old model of marketing and trying to sell to masses doesn’t work there. Many analysts think this is the way how music business is developing – the business model is slowly changing and the biggest income comes out of touring & merchandise.

The reason why I'm a fan of mr. Ito, is that he actually thinks of the bigger picture, the business side of copyrights. I mean there should be a business side if some people (artists + the people working for/with the artist) want to focus full time on making music and making a living out of it.

Jere used to be a really good ice-hockey player. But he also knew how to party, both in the best Vantaa-ghetto style as well as in international jet-set styleeee, and now he's in trouble again.

Why? Beacuse police seized these photos from somewhere, one of which apparently shows "a baggie containing approximately 30 grammes of cocaine", as well as some of the same substance on his nose. And there were those white lines on the table too.
