Cocoa Tea and Riker's Island

History lesson #1. Cocoa Tea's been around since the 80's and he's one of the abc's of reggae, dancehall an DJ culture, so know you know.

History lesson #2. Riker's island is the classic from Cocoa Tea, and it tells a story of an NYC prison where Tupac and Lil Wayne have served some time. Crime doesn't pay, so you know now.

History lesson #3. The segregated unit at Rikers for LGBT prisoners was closed down in 2005. I guess Cocoa Tea was not singing about this unit..

Fillarikorjaamo feat. Kriton Bangers DJ's Once Again

Yes, it's on again! This time with Hennyman and Alppila spinning some weird science with guest appearances as well. Hennyman will be filling his Chrome Messenger bag with classics & fresh picks from Jamaica and Alppila will have a wide selection of electronic pop I guess. And 'cos we also rock Serato nowadays, you can expect anything from us, 'cos we hold no barriers when it comes to mixing great songs together. Mos Def a short MJ appreciation set at some point. Or then not.

So come to Korjaamo this friday to witness the fitness! Take yer bike as well.

DJing to the masses

Once again, it comes from Sweden. This one's called Pacemaker. It's a handheld portable DJ-gear to democratise the DJ culture. Good be nice add on to those summer picnics.

And yes, one of the master minds behind this is Stakka Bo... Y'all remember this hit from the past?

Kriton Ice Rink Bangers live on 28.3.

On saturday 28.3 the Kriton Boys will be spinning discs at the Jääpuisto That's gonna be literally a cool happening, 'cos the place is an ice rink , a bit like the Rockefeller Center in NYC.

Wikipedia tells us that "An ice rink is a frozen body of water where people can ice skate or play winter sports. Some of its uses include playing ice hockey, figure skating exhibitions and contests, and ice shows".

We hope that there won't be too much ice hockey going on as we start playing them records, 'cos we don't have no "we will rock you" or any other sport event standards in our vinyl bags.

It's gonna be an early start, we'll be there from 4pm to 6 pm, and we're gonna focus a lot on easy going reggae, and maybe some smooth hip hop sounds. A good way to start the evening before you head out to the Tres Bien-club later on.

Maybe we'll play some eski-chunes as well...

Whatever happened to Turntablism?

Once upon a time (in 1990s if I remember correctly) there used to be this really really really trendy thing called 'Turntablism'.

Scratch DJs, or better yet 'Turntablists', used to be heroes of teenage kids dreaming about getting Technics SL1200s for Xmas looked up to. But somehow everyone seems to have collectively forgotten about that, or is everyone maybe just in denial? Also, the market value of (often trashed to death) turntables sees to have dropped near zero.

Well, who cares because the video clip posted above proves that like Japan's DJ Tucker, you can still use the words 'interesting' and 'scratch DJ' it the same sentence, if you have an organ, that is. That's called evolution, I guess.

Or:
Is that just an illustrative example showing how stupid it is when the turntablists claim that they are 'playing their decks like instruments'? I mean, obviously the sounds that come out of the organ as Dj Tucker rocks it are not the most musical ones in the conventional sense of the word. So if that's what scratching is when transferred to a real instrument, then, like even a half paralyzed deaf & mute one-handed person could probably do that, right?

So maybe better keep scratching 'em vinyls instead, mmmkay?
