Dear Metro, Welcome to Espoo.

Dear Metro,
I would like to warmly welcome you, the extension of the Helsinki’s one and only subway line, to the wonderful City of Espoo.

As you indeed already know, many of us have been waiting for you since the 1980s, even if the local decision-makers in the city government, most of them from more or less politically conservative and right-leaning, have not taken much heed to the wishes of the citizens.

We are very happy that you have finally decided to come and to bring means of relatively economic and in long-term definitely environmentally much more sustainable mass-transit for the people living in Espoo. Even, if it will still take anywhere between 7-15 years before the trains actually start running.

Nevermind the fact that many of us do not even live in Espoo anymore. And let's just forget about the fact that some of us have indeed moved away to Helsinki and decided to stay there, probably completely unrelated to the metro-issue.

* * * * *

Ok, maybe my so-called 'Open Letter'/rant needs so explanation, maybe not. Anyhow, it's cool that City Of Espoo, the "Los Angeles of Finland" finally decides allow the subway to be built there. The goverment will pay for 30% of it and all. I have been waiting this for 20 years already but the nice people in power in Espoo always resisted for no reason at all and drove their cars to Helsinki every day all day (where most of them work anyway) causing air pollution and traffic congestion. During all these years some of the arguments against the subway bordering on propaganda have gone along the lines (in worst cases) like "if we build a metro line to Espoo from Helsinki, then all the poor unemployed alcoholic white trash from eastern Helsinki will flow to Espoo and bring all their social problems along...". Yeah, right.

But now those people have finally lost the game.

I Love Spaceships. I really do.

The Space Shuttle Atlantis returned to earth and landed safely at NASA's Kennedy space Center in Florida yesterday, after 12 days in space. Hooray!

‘Yeah, so what?’, you might ask. But let's spend a minute thinking about spaceships. Spaceships are cool. In fact they are about the coolest things man has been able to conceive and build.

Let me quote NASA here: ‘The space shuttle, the most complex machine ever built, is the only spacecraft with its robust capacity. The shuttle’s capacity enables human today to build the world’s largest orbiting laboratory, paving way back to the moon, on to Mars and further into the universe.’

Flying machine that flies a bunch of people away from the earth? Whoa, dude! And just look at that picture of Atlantis landing there.

Ok, maybe there’s one flying thing almost equally cool as a space shuttle and that’s the F-117A Night Hawk, or the Stealth Fighter, but since it’s a military aircraft (and I am a pacifist) plus it cannot go into space, we can forget about it.

And when I think about things that I though were cool when I was a kid and that I still think are cool, there aren’t that many things left there, except for spaceships of course. Police cars and fire trucks? Not really. Candy and lemonade? Well, I am not really sure anymore. Chopper-bicycles; doesn’t every trendy wannabe-rocker-idiot have one of those these days? You get what I mean?

Spaceships. ‘Nuff Respect!

UPDATE!UPDATE!UPDATE!UPDATE!UPDATE!UPDATE!

Now it is official too, see the official site by clicking this.

But then the real let down & bad part: current list price: $1,299. Say whaaat?!???

TV standards

It's suprising to see how some tv shows can keep up their standards and not lose their grip. There are many examples of those who can't do it, but not so many of those who could. One of my all time favourites is of course the Simpsons. The first seasons were a bit more clever than the rest, but I must say that I'm still always nailed to the screen, once the classic theme begins.

They are now actually converting the early episodes of the series into Ipod-format, so you could get your Simpsons with you where ever you go. I guess the Simpsons are just about the best mobile video content you can imagine.

The clip above is not new, but it's hilarious. Yah mon!

New exclusive Kriton Posse material out now!

Hennessy has remixed the NYC anthem "New York Shit" by Busta Rhymes. This track was done during one hot afternoon this past summer in a far away summer cottage / studio, where some of the Kriton boys like to chill out and hide from the urban stress and feel the Hyphy/Crunk Sauna. So you should feel the heat from this baby.

This remix pays homage to the big apple and the 80's thru 90's hip hop producers. This remix will not be on the Kriton High School Bangers' upcoming "..presents the Bangers" -remix cd, it's a special treat for all Kriton fans out there.

You can download this exclusive banger for free from www.Kriton.biz.

SMASH ASEM: Riot in Helsinki, or was it really?

Time for some politics again.

On Saturday afternoon, September 9th, Finnish police force closed down several Leftist & Anarchist groups’ legal SMASH ASEM demonstration against the ASEM 2006 summit in the center of Helsinki.

Helsingin sanomat writes:

The "Smash Asem" demonstration began peacefully at around 6 p.m., but was unable to move on from the gathering point in the square in front of Kiasma by the arrival of around 200 riot police equipped with shields, helmets, and truncheons.

Not merely the 300 or so demonstrators were hemmed in, but also passers-by on their way home, journalists and cameramen, and people who had turned up out of curiosity to see what was happening, and whether the demonstrators would make good on their website pledge to "bring at least a bit of disorder to the streets of Helsinki".

There were a further several hundred police officers behind the inner ring, as well as five Helsinki City Transport buses arranged as a wall.

In all 136 people including two members of Helsinki City Council were arrested and kept in custody over night for questioning. Five people, none of which were police officers, were injured.

The police prohibited people from using their constitutional right of demonstrating in a public space, right to gather and the right to free speech. During the demonstration some police officers also apparently threatened Mr. Ilkka Tapale, a social-democrat member of parliament by telling him that they could arrest him too (note: according to the Finnish law they cannot do this). Police and Finnish BOrder & Customs officers were filming the demonstrators and and passers-by for their own records. Names and IDs of both demonstrators and people watching the incidents were recorded before they were allowed to leave the place. Police officers hid their name and ID badges.

Finland is a democratic society that prides itself as an example of a democracy, egalitarianism, all encopassing welfare state, transparency of administration and so on and so on.

As J-Dilla (RIP) and NWA said it “Fuck The Police”.

Rap impersonator extraordinaire

I used to consider impersonators as pretty friggin' dull, I mean guys like JP don't really make me laugh. Then there are guys like Dave Chapelle, who do it pretty good - not maybe technically, but they can capture the real essence of the person in the case (like the classics "I'm Rick James, b****" and such). But this guy in the clip above is awesome. He don't make me laugh either, but uzgotta admit, he's the top cat. He goes so smoothly from Snoop Dogg to Jay Z to DMX.

And I also love the beat (Nas: thief's Theme) that samples the ever great "Inagaddadavida" by Iron Butterfly . What actually makes me laugh, is that it reminds me of the Simpsons' episode, where the reverend went berzerk and started singing the same tune, with the lyrics "in the garden of eden, baby..."

Marbury Starbury fo' $15 only

Once again, interesting news stolen from the excellent Popbitch-newsletter:

While every top NBA-baller has their own $150+ dollar sneaker models out, New York Knick’s Stephon Marbury has made it his mission to bring out a line of shoes for poor kids. The cost of his new sneaker the Starbury is just $15. And the dude is wearing the shoe on court himself.

Even if I personally hate the way those techno-b-ball-sneakers look (I prefer more that classic old school style in sneakers), I think this is actually pretty cool thing and it somehow reminds me a lot of 50 Cents’ G-Apple thing.

The Starbury sneakers are sold only in US discount store Steve & Barry's, which prides itself on enabling a family to be clothed for a year for $100. The shoe has become a word-of-mouth phenomenon. Queues run outside the stores, with a two-item per person limit now enforced on the Starbury range. Marbury's aim is to show people just how little it really costs to make high quality sneakers. "Two hundred to buy a pair of sneakers? That's groceries for the week," he says. "History is going to say Stephon Marbury changed the game."

Edu For President!

This is the new s***t. Edu Kehäkettunen feat. Stig Dogg have remade the hook from the song Liiku by the mormon (!) R&B-singer Jonna and the mainstream rapper Cheek.

Here's the link to EDU'S PAGE, there you have the song. If you speak finnish, you will get the message how they've turned the catchphrase or the lyrical hook around to make it really durrrrty - not a surprise here, concidering what Edu and Stiggity have done in th past. . If you don't get any finnish, just enjoy the autotune - it's still all good.

I spoke with Stig the other day, and he said people are already requesting this song during his shows - although it's actually Edu's material...

Guitar Gear Whore Strikes Again! Hanoi Rocks Equipment 4 Sale

To all you Rock*n*Roll Fiends out there, check this out. It is a Marshall JMP bass tube amp from 1973 for sale on Finnish Huuto.Net auction site, but what’s special here is that the seller claims that it was previously owned by Nasty Suicide from the Legendary Hanoi Rocks.

What more need I say about this? If it really is Nasse’s old amp, it is a piece of Finnish Rock’n’Roll history and at least so far it is not that expensive either. Those old tube Marshall amps change hands for
big money
these days anyway if you check out Ebay. Damn, if I had more money I would invest on that and sell it later to a Japanese collector for crazy money.

After the original Hanoi Rocks line up broke up Nasty played with Johnny Thunders, had couple of bands (Cherry Bombs, Demolition 23 most notably) and then quit rock’n’roll and returned to Finland to complete high school. Later he got into university and graduated with a provisor’s diploma in Dept. of Pharmacology at the University of Helsinki. But you know, apparently he did have some knowledge of different chemicals and substances prior to that - from The Rock'n'Roll University.

Drunks at the newspaperstand

It’s great that all the best subcultures have their own zines. And there seems to be one out there for those who adore the almighty alcoholic beverages. Modern Drunkard is the magazine for you drunks out there. I shortly looked at the web version, and boy… they’ve got it all:

- a guide to manly drinks
- booze reviews
- wino wisdom
- guns and tequila
- drunkard of the month

I still don't think that it's actually very modern to be drunk, or is it? Is booze really the new cool?

Thumbs Up fi Apple

Like all nerds know, Apple is replacing 1.8 million batteries that have been used on their Powerbook/Ibook- laptops, because they have a risk of heating up a bit too much. I just checked my serial number and Apple promises to replace my battery as well, although it's less than 6 months old. This is how all companies should work: if there is a problem, face it and do somenthing about it. I think that Apple can handle this part very well. And if you want to blame someone, blame Sony - they're the ones who made this batteries in question...

Free Music - ain't no such thaaang??

Many people keep on talking about the new internet revolution "Web 2.0" , which basically is what services GoogleMap, Flickr or Youtube and such have to offer now.

But what I find really interesting, is the key question of sharing of legal free audiovisual content on public websites, I'm not referring to p-to-p here, they're already the king s***t. We had an earlier post here about free movies and today I read an article about a new service/company called "Spiral Frog". As of december they will be offering: " ad-supported legal downloads of audio and video content licensed from the catalogs of the world’s major and independent record labels.

They're starting with Universal's catalog and they've already paid in advance to the label for the right to use their material. It's interesting to see, how these new business ideas will work, there is definately a shift in the distribution and consumption of music in the near future.

I for one believe in the ad-based business model. It offers endless possibilities for youth marketing with services like YouTube an so on. It's a win-win situation: kids get what they want for free and advertisers get an unique channel that provides an optimal media environment to engage the kids. I mean a kid who's wathing a 50 cent backstage video on the net will be most likely in a mood to get interested in the new G-Unit sneakers he will be offered at the same time...

Question: Why is it…?

You remember that old Sadat X track, “F**K DAT!”? I do. Having bit of an attitude is always good thing, it’s a survival thing if you are living a urban jungle. Letting out your anger is also good for mental health, I suppose, so here we go. Here are four irritating/stupid/fucked up things that I encountered during last weekend:

1.) Friday noon, outside my office building here in Sörnäinen AKA 'Kurvi' there was an old alcoholic/substance abuser passed out on the street. Just like that. Next to people standing around waiting for their busses and so on. Yeah, this is bit of a rough neighborhood but whatever. Fuck that.

2.) Friday evening, we were on our way to movies. In the tram there was this complete postcard punk guy with his big stupid pink mohawk-hairdo, piercings all over his face, customized leather jacked with all the necessary gear, boots & braces and whatnot. However, I simply could not help hearing while he was discussing different types of English imported ciders and their taste characteristics like a bloody connoisseur with his pal. What’s up with that? I have heard about cider punks but in my world real raw/grungy punks drink that nasty home-made alcohol (‘Kilju’) until they pass out, not snotty & expensive foreign ciders. Get a life you middle-class poser.

3.) Saturday noon, I was leaving my house and there was an old alcoholic/substance abuser passed out/sleeping by the wall of the next building from our house. While I stopped to check him out and to document the scene by taking a photo, another old drunken guy arrived and made sure that the guy on the ground was alive (he was apparently just sleeping…). The second guy thanked me for caring about my fellow man and blah blah. Whatever. Those drunks are major obstacle for increasing of the real estate prices in my hood. Not cool.

4.) Our Internet connection was not working from friday morning to sunday afternoon. That’s fucked up too. Yeah, it’s been cutting on/off a bit every once in a while but never for such a long time. Well, I called my ISP and finished the contract, since they were asking for it. Besides, it’s good to change your ISP every 6 months or so, so that you get all the good deals like 3 first monthly payments 50% off.

“Amazon.com has new recommendations for you…”

Have you ever purchased books from Amazon.com? Well, I have, several books in fact. You know how that have their system where after every book you browse you get automatic recommendations like, “other people who bought this book also liked this book” etc.? That’s neat I think, and I have ended buying books based on that too. But, and here is a big BUT, couple of days I ago Amazon.com sent me an email:

“XXXXXX XXXX, Amazon.com has new recommendations for you based on items you purchased or told us you own.

We recommend:
Romancing Mary Jane: A Year in the Life of a Failed Marijuana Grower by Michael Poole

Recommended because you purchased or rated:
* Pot Planet: Adventures in Global Marijuana Culture

Book Description
“This is an intimate, funny, and eye-opening account of ten months in the life of a neophyte marijuana grower. Entering middle age, Michael Poole decides to retire from the film industry. He moves to British Columbia and throws himself wholeheartedly into marijuana cultivation, thinking that he'll make a bundle. Along the way, he experiences all the paranoia and other vagaries of the pot farming subculture. Romancing Mary Jane is an engaging blend of metaphysics, marijuana, and midlife crisis.“ “

Yeah, I admit it, I did buy Pot Planet like two years ago and I did enjoy it a lot but now I am starting to feel that THEY know a little bit too much about me & my preferences…

Kelly Clarkson totally rules! Awesome, man!

Now, to celebrate the fact that the weekend is here, I got here something funny for all of you fans of Kelly Clarkson, from YouTube.com, or course.

Crack open a bottle of beer and click here, it’s a great video from Metal Skool’s gig where the band notice Kelly & her boyfriend in the audience and pick them up on stage, make her drink Chivas Regal whiskey out of the bottle and sing a Guns’N’Roses song & dance & act stupid with them. It’s kinda incredible stuff thinking about her public image but goes to show that she knows how to have fun like a regular person and all that.

The whole thing is 100% pure American Fun, entertaining like h*ll, and something that even Somi would probably appreciate.

Gorilla Biscuits reunion

I haven't really been into hardcore punk music for like six years or so and haven't been up to date on the whole scene. So I was really surprised to read that Gorilla Biscuits (one of the best punk/hardcore bands eva) is on a reunion tour. How cool is that?

Though they might not be as hard as they used to be in the late 80's, early 90's, but they still get my full respect. I just hope the haven't gained too much weight and started drinkin' beer or anything too middle classy. It's also too bad that Sammy ain't banging the drums no more, he was one of my favourites, the guy who looked like he was 11 years old in the album covers of Youth Of Today.

GB is also recording a new album and remastering the classic "Start Today". Go youtubing and check 'em out. Youtube is great for many purposes, and it is also a great way to reminiscence the glory days of NYHC - if you're the type who likes to walk down the memory lane.

Osama Loves Whitney - and other stuff too...

You probably already read this everywhere but it is still really fascinating to get inside the head of AmeriKKKas Most Wanted man.

Stolen from Popbitch.com’s excellent weekly newsletter:

"Kola Boof is a Sudanese poet and member of the Sudanese People's Liberation Army. She claims she was kept as a sex slave by Osama Bin Laden in Morocco in 1998. Kola tells us that Osama:

· Is a big fan of Miami Vice and McGyver
· Answers to the nickname "Somi"
· Liked her to dance naked to B52s' Rock Lobster, while he shouted at her "Dance like a Caucasoid girl!
· Respects Van Halen
· Is very good at deep sea fishing
· Liked hunting birds and wild boar
· Was obsessed by Whitney Houston

After this I don’t really get it why he hates western world? Maybe we should send Dave Lee Roth, Whitney, Don Johnson and the guy who palyed Rico Tubbs, McGyver and The B52’s to meet him and to try to chill him out a bit. They could party, go fishing and hunting together and watch old Miami Vice episodes and do all kinds of cool stuff together. Maybe 'Somi' wouldn't feel so much like blowing up aeroplanes and skyscrapers after that anymore.

It was also reported somewhere else that Osama thought that Whitney is the most beautiful woman in the world and he was very much concerned with Whitney's apparent drug problems, which he felt were caused by American culture and her husband Bobby Brown. And because Bobby had 'brainwashed' Whitney, Osama even threatened to have Bobby Brown assasinated. Osama also wanted to give Whitney as a present a villa he owns in Khartoum, Sudan.

It’s All About Elvis’ House. Uri Geller (Needs) To Strike Back. Hard!

I just read news about how the legendary Spoon Bender from the 1970s and also one of Michael Jackson’s best friends, magician Uri Geller is caught up in a court case with Ebay and involving Elvis Presley’s former home. This is the house which Elvis apparently bought with his first royalty check and where lived, although only for 13 months, with his parents and grand mother before he moved to Graceland.

Some facts about the house here:

“Elvis Presley bought the four-bedroom, two-bath house at 1034 Audubon Drive in Memphis, Tennesee, in 1956 with a down payment of $500. During his time in the white, ranch-style house with an outdoor swimming pool, Presley's career took off with hits such as "All Shook Up" and "Don't be cruel."

“Part of the legend is that the neighbors did not like Elvis. Some of the neighbors were said to regard the Presleys as “white trash, hillbillies.” Or they viewed his performances as crude, or sinful. Apparently not everyone on Audubon Drive shared those views. A few of the surviving neighbors are careful to explain that they liked the family, but did not like the noise and confusion surrounding them.”.

Apparently Mr. Geller placed a winning bid of 905 100 US dollars for house on Ebay in May. However, when Geller and his lawyers demanded that the current owners and residents had to get out of the house within two months’ time they cancelled the deal and sold the house again, this time directly to a record producer Mike Curb, who paid them one million dollars for the house.

Now Geller is mad and is demanding compensation since when you are selling something on Ebay you are under a binding contract to sell etc. Never mind whether Geller really needs any monetary compensation - he is apparently filthy rich - but I am still on his side. People who cheat on online-auctions suck. And I personally would be very careful not to piss off a magician.

Go Uri! Punish them! At least you can bend all of those stupid people’s teaspoons for revenge!

Boycott Koff now!!

Earlier I stated that this blog has been getting too political and socially conscious and that we should discuss more "earthly" subjects. So here we go, let's talk about beer.

Koff Brewery informed us earlier this year that they will bring Brooklyn Lager to Finland during the early summer. This was something that we the Kriton Posse really waited for, because we're all newyorkers inside. But to a great surprise, we couln't find any BL anywehere during the whole friggin' summer. These guys at Koff know a thing or two about marketing beer to the "youthful" segment (they brought 50 cent and Foo Fighters to play exclusive shows) but this time they have stepped over the line and made a promise they couldn't keep. That is something we the consumers can not tolerate, they have not even given us a proper explanation for all this. WHERE IS F*** IS MR KOFF AT WITH MY BL?

So this is a start of an official boycott - a true case of consumer empowerment. I will not purchase any Koff beer until we get Brooklyn Lager to the shops like promised. And I will ask for all you decent BL-lovin' criminals to join me.

Got my Vans on, but they look like sneakers

Uniform choice has always been one of the most important things in all youth subcultures since 1950's or so. You gotta show your peeps that your're a) just like them and b) nothing like all the others. This is the common ambivalent function of fashion that sociologists have been blubbering about since the birth of Frankfurt School.

Last weekend I went to an alternative music festival and I realized that the checkered Vans seem to be the official shoe of choice for neopunk/emo kids. I mean, like 75 % of them had their Vans on(see pic above). I guess that's ok, 'cos I've always been into Vans and the "dogtown"/ and 70's to 80's skateboard thing. But as I am not a neopunk kid (thank lord) I therefore can't been caught wearing the checkered Vans any day soon. I guess I'm more like a Nike guy nowadays, quite unlike The Pack would say:

"Man, we be sportin vans and we throw away Nikes
If u wanna get right, stop buyin those Nikes "

It's a reeeeeeeeemiiiiiiiiiix

Yes! Kriton's back in the building! After a long summer we finally got together to work on out new Remix/Mixtape/Blend-project. We've all been doing music by ourselves for the last few months, but yesterday all three of us hooked up in the Alppilounge studio and I must say the material we made yesterday was too hot to handle.

I won't reveal all of those songs we're gonna remix, but let's say that asome ATL rocking kings and some Bay Area old timers and some NYC-area smooth talkers are soon getting remixed in a totally Kriton style. Last nite we managed to create some wicked beats that had that Miami Vice and "In the air tonight meets pink flamingos" - kinda vibe. We'll report here how the remix-project goes on, and maybe we'll provide some sound samples as well. Things might get a bit weird when we start sampling Sonic Youth and grab our electric basses and mix that with some crunk accapellas. Or maybe we'll just sample some 90's backpacker hiphop and play some funk guitar to spice up the fresh country accapellas. Whos knows.

Too Much Beer For TURBONEGRO !!!

This rock’n’roll and beverages-related story is true:

Daughter of a lady who works in the same office as me has a summer job cleaning rooms in a President Hotel in the centre of Helsinki.

Last weekend there was the annual Ankka Rock Festival in Helsinki and on sunday the hardest rocking and most decadent and homo-erotic rock band that ever came out of Norway (excluding Burzum, of course), the mighty TURBONEGRO played at the festival.

Like many artists coming to Helsinki the band stayed at the President Hotel. In the afternoon of the next day, hours after the regular hotel check-out time, the aforementioned daughter was knocking on the door of TURBONEGRO’s room in order to clean it. The band, of course, was still in there. However, they were very polite, apologized and asked her to come around again after an hour. When she did, they were finally leaving and in order to thank the girl, they tipped her by giving her 1 and ½ big cases of Heineken beer that they still had. Nice!

But what does that mean? TURBONEGRO cannot finish all beer they had hoarded? Or, there were not enough party people helping them out with all their beer or what?

After hearing this story I suggested that they should sell the beer in Ebay as “Special TURBONEGRO Heineken Party Beer – undrunk, unopened can!” one can at the time and make good money but apparently they were just going to drink it with her friends.

Kill Your Coke!!! And Pepsi Too!

After my Peace in the Middle-East blog entry I want to bring in more social consciousness and awareness and to “infotain” you with some news from India.

The state of Kerala in South-western India banned completely selling Cola Cola and Pepsi after Indian research team claimed last week that they had found alarming amounts of high pesticide levels in the cola drinks. Four other Indian states have already banned selling cola-drinks in public schools and state offices for the same reason. Kerala is the first state that completely bans cola-drinks. It also happens to be politically one of India’s few leftist run-states.

Everybody knows that drinking cola drinks and especially all those low-sugar light cola drinks like Coke Light, Pepsi Max etc. cannot be very healthy since all they contain is water and a lot mysterious and scary chemicals. But when you think about all the environmental problems and disasters (one of the worst example being the Union Carbide Disaster in Bhopal in 1984, claimed by many as the worst industrial disaster in history) in developing countries, this all makes sense.

Mobile Ringtones to save the music industry?

The music industry and especially the big corporations have been worrying sick about not selling as many cd's as in the past. P-2-P -sharing is a lot bigger problem for them that old skool pirate cd's sold on the streets.

Here is where the rappers come to the resque. In the US this summer has been a succes for companies selling mobile ringtones and in the forefront have been rappers like Chamillionaire and Rick Ross. Below is the article from Digitalmusic.com:

Rapper Chamillionaire has just raised the bar on master ringtone sales by shifting three million tones. The accomplishment is for the smash hit "Ridin," which has enjoyed heavy spins and incredible momentum. Fans have a number of ways to grab the tone, including on- and off-deck options, and the artist has positioned the ringer aggressively on his website. The nosebleed result is part of an overnight mobile treasure chest for artists, particularly rappers. Chamillionaire, inked to Universal Motown Records, previously reached the two-million mark faster than any other artist. Several others have crossed the million mark, and fresh records keep pouring in. Earlier, rapper Rick Ross, signed to Slip-N-Slide/Def Jam, surpassed sales of one million master ringtones late last month. The Ross accomplishment represents the first time an artist has reached that level ahead of an album release.

That's a funny business, aye? With the new phones models everybody with a computer & internet connection could easily make those ringtones for free for themselves, but they still chose to downloadit for money...

Peace In The Middle-East, please.

I think that now is the time to say at least something about what is going on in the Middle-East.

The thing that came into my mind recently while reading about the current crisis in the newspaper was how during my Metalhead-period, one of the coolest bands used to be the notorious and legendarily politically UNcorrent S.O.D (Stormtroopers Of Death) and they had a song called ‘Fuck The Middle-East’, which went something like “FUCK THE MIDDLE-EAST, THERE’S TOO MANY PROBLEMS!!!”. That used to sound quite appropriate back then in the 1980s.

However, when I checked out the rest of the lyrics now, I don’t want to quote them more than that first line because now it seems to me like Billy Milano, Scott Ian and co. were like deranged little brothers of George W. Bush (if that concept is even possible to imagine) . But they, they must have been ironic, yeah? Another S.O.D. favorite was always ‘Ballad of Jimi Hendrix’, which consisted of about 2 seconds of guitar noise and the lyrics ‘HE’S DEAD!”.

Anyhow, about the current crisis; I have really nothing to say about those soldiers - from either side - who have died but the latest ‘collateral damage’ ie. civilian victim count is that 27 Israeli civilians have died, against over 900 Lebanese civilians, about 1/3 of whom were CHILDREN of under 12-years. Add to that the fact that about one million Lebanese people have had to leave their homes in order to escape Israeli army’s extremely randomly spread bombs.

Then there's the whole environmental disaster of millions of gallons of spilt heavy raw oil that has apparently already destroyed the whole eco-system of the Lebanon's coast etc.

Fuck all that. You know whose I am on. But all this makes sad.
Stop it already, alright?!

It's convict music!

Yeah, that's Akon's catch phrase, that's how he seems to begin every new song he features in. That habbit itself is nothing new, it's a common jamaican deejay thing: Vybz Kartel's got "up to di time", Beenie Man has "Zigga Zow" and Elephant Man's got "Chu know..." and so on and so on. It's a good way to make yourself known, that's like "sonic branding" or whateva.

I just heard the new Rick Ross album "Port Of Miami" (which is a banger!) and I just have to say that Akon is the man. The ever pompous song "Cross that line" with Rick is a sure hit, at least at casa de Hennessy. I mean, the guy's done "Soul Survivor" w/ the Snowman, "Locked up", "Ghetto", "Trouble Nobody" and he pretty much produces the stuff he does himself. Ok, Akon (born Aliaune Damala Bouga Time Puru Nacka Lu Lu Lu Badara Akon Thiam if you trust wikipedia) did that annoying "Lonely" tune, but that probably made him a lot of money too. An some enemies as well.

Akon should be releasing his nnext album soon, it should be called "In your eyes". So It's convict time y'all!

Why does Crunk Sauna beat Hyphy Sauna?

Introduction:

Summer vacation is a good time to do things you normally couldn’t find time for. Like homemade scientific tests. A few weeks ago we (Henny & Alppiboy) headed for a summer cottage for some R&R. One common theme in our late night discussions was the musical differences between hyphy and crunk. We analyzed the drum patterns, sounds, lyrics etc. in great detail but came to no clear conclusion that night.

However, the next morning we discovered a hidden soundsystem in the sauna. There, under the wooden benches was a nice 70’s style speaker connected to the 80’s era stereo rack in the other room. And we could easily plug our IRiver H320 MP3 player to the system. It was all mono, but bwoy it was loud! And there we had it: a place to empirically test hyphy and crunk material in the most unexpected environment – finnish lakeside sauna soundsystem. We were soooo hyped.

Thesis:

Our thesis was that the sauna bathing experience should be the same whether Hyphy or Crunk music was played during the bathing session.

The method:

The first test night was for crunk and second for hyphy. Both nights we used dry birch logs (approx. 30-40 cm in length and 15 cm in diameter) to warm up the “lab” to somewhere around 70-80 degrees Celsius (accurate measurements are not available, it could’ve been hotter at times, we were too stoked to write any details down during the tests). On crunk nite we played artists like Ludacris, Mike Jones, Trillville, Lil Jon, T.I., Bone Crusher and Three 6 Mafia and on hyphy nite it was strictly artists like E-40, The Federation, Keak The Sneak to name a few. Some amounts of refreshing beverages were also consumed during the test to prevent hydration.

Results:

Here are the results for the Crunk nite:

* the session took a lot longer than usually. Normally a 30 minute session turned into a 2 hour spectacle
* the sounds were clear and fat during the whole session
* we especially loved the overall kick sounds, they resonated quite nicely
* all artists suited the sauna environment well, highlights were T.I. and Paul Wall
* the louder the music was, better the sauna felt
* crunk seemed to fit the moist and hot environment better than expected
* 94 points out of 99 points on the SSE-scale (Subjective Sauna Experience)

And for the Hyphy nite:

* the session took no longer than usually (app. 30 minutes only)
* we had to take a break during the first 5 minutes, because the sauna got too dry
* found some hyphy songs not at all suitable for sauna (e.g. Tell Me When To Go by E-40 is a banger outside the sauna, inside it can really hurt you)
* we also felt anxiety and stress when the volume was set too high, probably because on some songs the 808 cowbells were mixed too loud
* there was a big difference between this and the previous night
* the overall experience was still slightly positive
65 points
on the SSE-scale

Conclusion:

We proved out thesis to be incorrect. Crunk is a far better choice for Sauna Soundtracks than Hyphy – reasons for this are however still a bit unclear. Our test were however not identical, our state of mind was a bit better on the first night, which might have had an effect on the results.

Therefore we strongly encourage you to do your own tests and report your results here. And put your Sauna shades on!

Happy Birthday MTV!

As of today MTV is 25 years old! The concept of MTV has changed a lot since the heyday of music videos and the heavy localization has already killed the MTV I fell in love with. And I won’t even start dissing the actual programming (yuh know, just Pimp My Ride and Newdlyweds, no music at prime time, not much hip hop…).

But I still think that the semilocal MTV2 and MTV Base are pretty cool. The content of both MTVBase and MTV2 at least in Finland comes from UK. And UK is the homeland of Sky Channel, which was my first contact with music vids! Y´all know the deal – Mick Wall and Monsters Of Roooooock….

Happy Bithday to MTV still. You’ve grown to be a big media player now, so beware of Youtube.com and other rivals of the digital age.

BIG NEWS JUST OUT: This is for La Raza!

Don’t you just hate the spam? All spam is bad, yeah, but I have been receiving lately a LOT of emails about some stupid supposed stock market insider information. Super-bo-oo-oring, I don’t have any money to put into American stock market anyway. Besides we have all seen what’s the deal with those, in The Sopranos. It’s all about da Mob fooling stupid people, seen?

Anyhow, this caught my eye today. Apparently I should buy a lot of Goldmark Industries, ‘a rising Urban Entertainment force’, stocks today because they are about to up – right now! Yeah right. But why, you may ask? Because of Kid Frost, homie! Remember ‘This is for La Raza…’ and the video with all those lowriders etc.

As it turns out the company has, and I quote,

“…enhanced its Executive Leadership with the addition of accomplished artist, Kid Frost, as Vice President of the Music Division. Frost is very well respected by already established act and is looked at as a role model by up and coming talent. He was the pioneer of Latin Hip Hop, which has exploded, with the extremely popular, Reggaeton over the past 4 years. Frost will serve as an ideal Vice President of Music Operations within Goldmark, due to his extensive musical knowledge, skills, history and experience.

Frost -- originally known as Kid Frost -- was a pioneer in the field of Latin hip-hop, cutting some of its very first records and helping to bring exposure to other bilingual MCs. Pioneering Latino rapper Frost only gets better with age. The veteran East Los Angeles rapper, who became a hip-hop icon in 1990 with his groundbreaking single "La Raza" has stepped up his game in the last decade, sharpening his lyrical skills and becoming an authority figure in the rap world. His success allowed such Latino rappers as Cypress Hill, Fat Joe, Big Pun to make substantial hip-hop inroads.

His music features a hard-hitting mix of hard-core hip-hop, smoothed out cuts for the ladies and laid-back songs for cruising.

Frost is an original and knows about originality. Rapping since 1980 Frost scored his first record deal with Electrobeat Records thanks to the help of his long time mentor and friend Ice-T. When deciding on his name, Frost decided to model his moniker after that of the man who helped start his career, choosing Frost since Frost comes before ice. Then known as Kid Frost, Frost became a regular on the car show circuit in the mid 1980's. When he released "La Raza" and his debut album, "Hispanic Causing Panic" a few years later, his visibility exploded and helped the Lowrider culture thrive in Southern California and eventually Worldwide.

Frost says, "As I see the KRS-Ones and the LL Cool J's still in it, I won't budge. A lot of people might say that I'm too old. But I don't think it's your age or how you rap. It's your rap skills that keep you in the game. As long as we make that knocking Chevy music, we're going to stay in this rap game."”

And to those of you who bothered to read/scroll all the way down here, here is a special bonus gift to yo'all: The extremely cool video of La Kid Frost's classic La Raza, with the latin ladies in crazyass bikinis, the lowriders, the homies, the mad sax line, nods to the Aztec-ancestors, the East L.A., los murales, the TR-808, the mad tattoos, the bandanas, dickies pants, Nike Cortez sneakers, homiee-ee-ez!.

How Indie am I?

As I mentioned before, I have been into good ol' Alternative Rock lately, (and I do recognize that indie and alt.rock are of course not same thing) as I am a white male in my early 30ies with an apparent and strong tendency of nostalgizing everything. Then I found this link (below) in Giac's blog. Doing the test and the results I got just proves what I wrote a while a go, even if I am a tad bit dissappointed in scoring only 60%, 6% less than Mr. Interflug, but I guess that this is my punishment from loving some good bloody beef every once in a while.

You Are 60% Indie

You're pretty indie, but you don't make a fuss letting everyone know.
You just do what you like. You enjoy many types of things - from trendy to bizarre.

Drummer wanted! Now wait a minute…

Today I just happened to notice this ad on the Finnish musicians’ www-discussion board http://muusikoiden.net/ and I just can’t stop wondering what these guys really sound like and what do they need a drummer for anyway? And they seem to be based in the suburban heaven/hell of Espoo, of all the places.

We are a Rock Band looking for a drummer who wants to join and play with us........

We are between 20 to 24 years of age.You dont have to be an expert as long as you can play along. If anyone is intrested please contact us. Mani: anarmie*@*hotmail.com

I am not an expert, in fact I cannot play drums for shit, but I am thinking of volunteering to help them out. What kind of a drummer are they looking for anyway? Like a death metal/grind core-guy to jam with the guitar player in the back or a someone who’s more into traditional Indian music or maybe into some vintage ‘70s Bollywood funk? Or maybe someone interested in programming some nice teutonic Euro-disco dancebeats on a laptop with the singer? Note also that the guy who posted the ad uses a rather fitting nickname "Confusion1".

This must be an awesome band in any case!

No, but in all seriousness, someone please help these guys out!

Sell All That Guitar Shit And Buy A Sequencer!

I have recently discovered my old electric guitar and all my guitar pedals (as well as some new old ones from the ’Bay) after many years and started playing guitar again. Incidentally I have started listening good old guitar-stuff like Dinosaur Jr., Pixies, Pavement, Sonic Youth and all those ‘alternative rock’ bands from early 90s again. My girlfriend thinks I am regressing back the me of fifteen years ago and she might have a point there.

However, today Giac sent me an email with the title “sell all that guitar shit and buy a sequencer!” with a link to Youtube.com – and to the video of Prodigy’s ‘Out of Space” . A totally great track that I used to love and I still do. But now I am all confused. I have been there before, what I am supposed to do? I already have a sampler and a sequencer (come on, who doesn’t?) both of which I have used to make my (mostly electronic) music for more that several years now.

But am I really going backwards or not? If I am in a self-repeating loop - and many people seem to believe that pop-culture trends move around in circles at increasing speed - logically and chronologically the next thing for me would be to start listening to techno again, preferably Detroit techno, and what would be better than Underground Resistance.

But hey, in August there will be Flow 2006 festival in Kallio, Helsinki, basically in my ‘hood, and performing there will be ‘Underground Resistance [U.R.] presents Galaxy 2 Galaxy & Los Hermanos (USA)’. Is this destiny or what?

But maybe even better that that is that there is also going to be "Happy Mondays DJ Set featuring Bez (UK)", if I decide to move even further backwards in time.

Countless conveniences of owning a Mac laptop.

I guess it is already quite obvious that all of us Kriton boys love our Macs and iPods. Well, as any Apple-gear whore I have been considering upgrading my old Powerbook to a lovely new Macbook since the day they came out. However, one thing holding me back has been the alarming reports about some new Macbooks being bit too hot for themselves sometimes. So, here is a blog/report telling you everything you need to know about the issue:
“Cooking Breakfast On A Macbook”.

1. Get a Macbook and turn it over so the screens over the edge of your desk/counter
2. Run your favorite process intensive program to get it to heat up
3 Some tinfoil on uper left part of the laptops underside (the hottest part of the macbook
4. Put your cup of coffee on the power supply to keep it warm
5. Cook your egg on the tinfoil, it will take longer than normal
6. Enjoy your breakfast.”

Yeah, there is even a video there.

“2005 Was The Year In Which Hip-Hop Moved Even More Squarely Into The Mainstream“

Continuing on where we left last time on the theme of hip-hop and consumer brands; American Brandstand has again published the TOP20 list of the brands that have been receiving most mentions in r&b and hip-hop tracks appearing on the Billboard charts in 2005.

The top ten brands mentioned in r&b and hip-hop tracks in 2005 were: Mercedes, Nike, Cadillac, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Hennessy, Chevrolet, Louis Vuitton, Crystal and AK-47.

Look here (scroll down a bit) for the whole chart with last years’ places and number of times different brands actually were hyped. Nothing surprising there, but American Brandstand also supplies some interesting analysis on the subject:

“2005 was the year in which hip-hop moved even more squarely into the mainstream - Kanye West made the cover of Time in August, and Snoop Dogg played croquet in the pages of Vanity Fair… Hip-hop is rapidly becoming synonymous with youth culture – in a rapidly growing number of global markets. And hip-hop is now influencing the whole of luxury culture in ways that was unimaginable only a few years ago. Mercedes emerged as the top brand of the year, and 50 Cent out-branded the rest to become the top brand-dropping artist. Overall the brands associated with lyrics this year have moved away from the ostentatious bling of 2004 towards brands with a more understated appeal.”

· Mercedes takes back the top position that it enjoyed in 2003 before being eclipsed by Cadillac in 2004. It wins by a huge margin - 37% more mentions, than runner-up Nike at #2.

· In the post-bling environment of hip-hop 2005, the total brand count falls 6%.

· Runner up brands: Nike, Cadillac, Bentley and Rolls Royce

· Runner up artists: Ludacris and The Game

· Fashion brands fell 9%, automotive brands dropped 5%, while the fastest drop is in beverage brands sliding 36%.

· The fastest growing category in 2005 was weaponry. The weapon count jumped 19%. The hottest new entry brand this year is pistol-brand Beretta mentioned by Dem Franchise Boys and The Game, which jumped into the Brandstand chart in 13th place.

· Some heavy-hitters from previous years dropped out this year, including Gucci (5th in 2004), and Lexus (11th in 2004) neither of which were mentioned at all.

Interesting, yes, less bling, guns are on the up, designer fashion and alcohol brands are going down. But wait, there are some problems here, when rappers are talking for example about AK-47, are they really talking about the rifle or…? There is also some pretty strange stuff on the chart, Japanese car brand Datsun for example, as well as certain fashion designers I would not easily associate with hip-hop, such as John Galliano and Vivienne Westwood.

One thing, which does makes me wonder is who actually listens to all the songs and counts these things?

Justin Timberlake is back, Sexy Back.

Since we have only been blogging about dead people here recently, we need to get on with a bit more uplifting vibe. So, let's concentrate on Justin Timberlake. What can you say about him? Even if he started out in Mickey Mouse Club and N*Sync, he also went out with Britney when she was still, well - decide for yourself, as well all those other girls. Then he worked with Timbaland and Snoop and so on and so on. Oh, wait, then there was of course the Janet & the nipple incident...

Anyhow, the dude is about ready to drop a new album and here is a special gift for yo’all and yo’iPods, a new track and the first single from the boy wonder, ‘Sexy Back’. Just grab it quickly while it is still up there.

I have no idea who produced it or any of that but I am happy that he didn’t try to go Baile Funk or Hyphy or whatever. But the track is “kinda dancefloor-friendly” and "European-sounding" and "electronic", no doubt about that. Besides that I will leave it up to you to decide whether it is any good really.

Edit: apparently the track is produced by Timbaland again, he even sings there if you actually bother to listen to the track.

Syd Barrett RIP. Shine On You Crazy Diamond

One more great guy is gone as legendary Syd Barrett died last friday at the age of 60. Although there’s been rumors about Barrett’s death (as well as he being in jail or turned into a vegetable due to excessive LSD intake) since late 1960s when he left Pink Floyd, this time it seems that he is gone for real. The psychedelic weirdness of his persona and complete disappearance from the media over 35 years ago only fed the rumors. Click this for a fascinating article about him from the Rolling Stone Magazine in December 1971.

I was in Amsterdam last friday and I am already starting to regret that I didn’t visit the Pink Floyd themed Umma Gumma Coffeeshop while there. Anyhow, IMO he was the only real cool guy of Pink Floyd and they only went downhill after he left them.

Here’s some essential info on the man:
Barrett co-founded Pink Floyd in 1965 and wrote many of the band's early songs. The group's jazz-infused rock and drug-laced, multimedia "happenings" made them darlings of the London psychedelic scene. The classic "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" album (1967) was largely written by Barrett. He played lead guitar in the band. However, Barrett suffered from mental instability, exacerbated by his use of LSD. He left the group in 1968 to be replaced by boring David Gilmour.

Barrett released two solo albums "The Madcap Laughs" and "Barrett" but he soon withdrew from the music business altogether. An album of previously unreleased material, "Opel," was issued in 1988.

He reverted to his real name, Roger Barrett, and spent much of the rest of his life living quietly in his hometown of Cambridge, England. Moving into his mother's suburban house, he passed the time painting and tending the garden. He was a familiar figure to neighbors, often seen cycling or walking to the corner store, but rarely spoke to the fans and journalists who sought him out over the years.

Thank you, Aaron Spelling!

Mid-Summer weekend, or ‘Juhannus’ in Finnish, is big party in Finland with some very particular things about it. A large part of population retreat to their summer cottages to barbeque some sausages, sit in a hot sauna and to swim in a lake, build and burn a huge bonfire and of course to drink more or less heavily. Consequently many people always lose their lives during the festivities, which is a truly sad thing. This year seven people drowned and at least four others died for different reasons.

However, let’s forget about those people for a moment and pay our respects one very special guy who passed away during the weekend. A man, who has given all of us so much mind-numbing entertainment and fun during last thirty years or so; The Über-TV-Producer, King of Soap Operas, Mr. Aaron Spelling.

Aaron Spelling passed away at the ripe age of 83 years in his home in Beverly Hills (90210, where else?) on Friday 23rd of June. Mr. Spelling has produced all the TV-series we have watched and loved: Love Boat, Starsky & Hutch, Dynasty, Charlie’s Angels, Hart to Hart, T. J. Hooker, Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, Twin Peaks, Charmed, Summerland and countless others during his long career. And of course he gave us his lovely, albeit rather surgically enchanced, daughter Tori Spelling too.

Watching those series, like I did watch BH 90210, Melrose Place and Twin Peaks (The Best TV-series of all time!), really must have had some kind of an effect on me when I was teenager, or at least on the image of American society that was forming in my mind. You just can't forget that classic episode where Brandon goes to Alcoholics Anonymoys after crashing his car while drunk driving, ...after drinking 2 beers.

Anyway, according to Guinness Book of World Records he is the most ‘productive’ TV-producer of all times as he has created more than 5000 hours of top quality soap operas for TV as well 300 hours of TV-films and about a dozen of movies for silver screen. Of course he made a lot money too, Forbes Magazine estimates that Spelling’s fortune is worth more than 300 million dollars.

And finally, Aaron Spelling’s life was also a real American Dream come true. He was born in a poor Jewish immigrant family in Texas in 1923 with Russian father and polish mother. First he tried to make it as an actor, without much success, but turned quickly into a producing - and the rest is history.

R.I.P Aaron Spelling

No more Cristal for Jay-Z

We all know how since mid-1990s all rappers all over the world loved to (or would have loved to if only they were rich enough) buy cases and cases of Louis Roederer Cristal Brut Champagne, drink it straight out of the bottle, pour it all over their hoes and peeps in da club and all that. We saw it in all the videos and hear about it in all the songs.

For those of you unfamiliar with this lovely drink, it is a really prestigious and rather expensive (at about 200 US dollars a bottle) brand of Champagne with long tradition. The company, Louis Roederer was founded in 1776 and is still family-owned etc.

Now, the new Managing Director of Louis Roederer Monsieur Frédéric Rouzaud has recently declared, in the best/worst manner only the real French bourgeois people are capable of, that they would have been much happier without all the free-commercial-time their product has been receiving during last few years. Apparently rappers pouring Cristal down their throats and all over all the booty in the vicinity was not the kind of advertisement Mr. Rouzaud has been planning to include on their subtle marketing.

When Rouzaud was asked if the association between Cristal and the "bling lifestyle" could be detrimental, he said: "That's a good question, but what can we do? We can't forbid people from buying it. I'm sure Dom Perignon or Krug would be delighted to have their business."

Jay-Z, one of the biggest endorsers the mentioned golden drink, has been really upset about this and as a consequence he has called everybody to boycott the-drink-that-shall-now-remain-nameless and he has also called Rouzaud’s comments as racist.

Jay-Z’s boycott means that his night clubs are not selling Cristal anymore, there will be no more mentions of it on the records his label produces and so on. It remains to be seen whether the nasty C-word will be beeped out from all re-released rap-records from here on out?

Apple and 50 Cent producing Ghetto Apple AKA G-Apple!

Here’s more Apple-related facinating news stolen off the AppleInsider.com:

According to Forbes Magazine, Fitty Cent is negotiating a branding deal with Steve Jobs and Apple. Well, so what?
Here’s what: Fiddy wants to endorse a Apple-produced a line of affordable home computers for inner-city residents (ie. the ghetto, da hood). Apparently he wants to help in getting affordable computers in the hands of the less wealthy and so on. That’s great, of course.

But to think about it, 50 Cent plus Apple Computers equals to what? Lots of blingbling, lots of (many would argue 100% fake) street credibility and nicely designed computers produced very cheaply and sometimes maybe even in rather questionable working conditions somewhere in China. So, basically what they are working on would be perfect ‘Ghetto Laptop’, or even better, ‘Ghetto Apple’.

If I was better with Photoshop, I could try to produce a vision of what it could look like so here’s an assingnment to all yo’all budding graphic designers out there reading this.

Here’s what Fitty himself is saying: "I'm creating a foundation that will be around for a long time, because fame can come and go or get lost in the lifestyle and the splurging, I never got into it for the music. I got into it for the business."

I won’t say anything about his last sentence above. Yo, everybody knows that Major League Hip hop is not about the music, it’s always about da biznezz, like on the way paved by Puffy and Jay-Z and everyone after them. Whatever.

Also we all should know that ‘50 Cent ranks amongst the world's richest celebrities, raking in over $67 million in 2005 from record sales and branding deals that include a line of sneakers, a video game and his G-Unit clothing line.’

iPod City. The Dark Side of Apple?

Since us Kriton boys (myself included) have our iPods and Apple laptops, I though I need to bring this news to everybody’s attention:

The British newspaper Mail On Sunday claimed in their recent report that Foxxconn Electronics, a huge Taiwanese industrial electronics contract manufacturing corporation based in Longhua in Shenzhen Special Economic Zone in southern China, which manufactures, among many other gadgets and cool things, iPods for Apple, pays their workers as little as $50 dollars per month for working 15 hours a day. The workers, and the company employs over 160 000 of them, working in what Mail on Sunday calls ‘iPod City’, and in sweatshop –type environment.

Here are some quotes from the article:
“When they're not on the assembly lines, they live in secluded dormitories that each house 100 people and prohibit visitors from the outside world. The workers are allowed "a few possessions" and a "bucket to wash their clothes." "We have to work too hard and I am always tired. It's like being in the army," Zang Lan, one of the workers at Longhua, told the Mail. "They make us stand still for hours. If we move we are punished by being made to stand still for longer. The boys are made to do pushups."

“According to the report, iPod Nano is made in a five-story factory called "E3" that is secured by armed police officers. Another factory in near Shanghai manufacturers iPod shuffles and is completely surrounded by barbed wire. At this facility, 50,000 workers are housed outside the plant and earn about $99 per month. However, they must pay out of pocket for their accommodations and food, "which takes up half their salaries." One security guard told the Mail that the iPod shuffle production lines are staffed by women workers because ‘they are more honest than male workers.’"

Foxxconn Electronics of course “sternly denies” these claims as false and calls them a "vicious attack". Foxxxonn also claims that its "employment practices are completely in accordance with the requirements of Shenzhen labor supervision departments." And apparently they have been actively making improvements to workers' living conditions, providing safe and well-equipped dormitories complete with free laundry service, sports facilities, libraries, and other facilities.

Apple Corp. of course has responded to this by issuing a statement saying it is looking into the report. "Apple is committed to ensuring that working conditions in our supply chain are safe, workers are treated with respect and dignity, and manufacturing processes are environmentally responsible," the statement said, according to Macworld UK. Apple also claim that "it does not tolerate any violations of its supplier code of conduct."

K-Biz officially down!

K-Biz officially down!
Originally uploaded by fiilinc.
That's right. Already for a couple of days, www.kriton.biz has been down, and will be until we purchase sum mo' bandwidth. Or whatever we decide to to...

For this, I blame you America, though.. The server people gave us some statistics of our recent traffic, and the results were thoroughly confusing. It shows that on june 9th and 10th, we've had over 1500 visitors mostly from the US of A who used over 2 gb of our not-so limited bandwidth. Thank you, b****s. Without you bastards we would have bee just okay for the rest of the year really. Or then again, our server company can also be screwing us. Who knows.

But, because of that, for now the official Kriton information centres remain our hot little MySpace site (www.myspace.com/kritonhigh) and this blog that you are reading.

At the moment Kriton Music stays active with a couple of new tracks. KHSB has a new grimy rocker called "Scared Money" all ready for mastering, and Spazz Out has been finishing their first release, the baile-tastic anthem named "Coca Cola". People have also been hearin a brand new balearic-style hiphop-rock-gospel sound around the Alppitech studio. Just Blaze meets Primal Scream? Happy Mondays goes Baltimore? You will hear from this!!

Keep on loving!
Big Alppila n da K-boys

ps. Oooooooh, Diplo & A-Trak tonight at Nosturi, Helsinki. That's where it's at kids!!

Mosquitos are-a-cumming

When people get older they lose their ability to hear high pitch tones. This is a fact that some evil minds have now turned into an innovation called "The Mosquito". The Mosquito is marketed as "an ultrasonic teenager repellent, an ear-splitting 17-kilohertz buzzer designed to help shopkeepers disperse young people loitering in front of their stores while leaving adults unaffected." Huh.. quite orwellian and 1984-ish, aint't that?

However some kids have found a way to use this innovation for the kids not against them - as ring tones that can't be heard by older people. Check the article.

I tested the tone, and I must say it is pretty painful. Although I am well over 21, so maybe this one ain't working as well as the actual Mosquito? However I tested this (of course!) at the office and the results were quite clear: peep over 35 and sumthing reacted slightly on didn't react at all. And peeps in their 20's could hear this tone from another room and reported the noise to be "extemely painful" and "really annoying" ... I guess I'll be making many friends here...

Is this a new phase of the "control state"? I could think of many possible uses for such a tone. Think of mass concerts / demonstrations gone wild - a few speakers on top of the gestapo-policecar could send all kids home crying. This is evil. Truely, madly and deeply.

New School vs. Old School

A few posts ago jzZi aka "Mr Singapore Sling" showed us a pic of his famous Blueberry-Jopo. And surprisingly a combination of keywords "Jopo" and "Helsinki" brought some new visitors to our blog from Google, so thank you Sergey Brin and Larry Page for generating that traffic for us :-)

In his post Jzzi argued strongly that the old school Jopo is the only preferable choice, but I there have to disagree. The new Jopos might lack some of the style of the old ones (I specially like the main part of the old frame that has this box-like form and sharp edges, unlike the new round tube) but I think the new ones are pretty cool still. Like Tyler Brule had to say:

"Just as BMW has done much with the Mini, Helkama is sitting on a 1960s design icon called the Jopo that could become the urban runabout of choice everywhere from Nice to Nagoya."

Actually I think they're so cool that I had to get one for myself for urban commuting (mainly for that 5 min. ride to the office). I could have bought a classic Jopo just as well, but after a few months of serious e-baying (or huuto.netting here in Finland) I realized that it is a seller's market now for second hand Jopos here, they prices they were asking were insane. And they had this new down-to-earth-army-green color to match my needs, and I was sold.

I now dare you readers of this blog to vote: new school or old school, which is better? Your comments don't have to regard Jopos, we could widen this debate to ather areas of interest: cars, music, underwear, comic books, arts or what eva. I'd go for new school when it comes to bikes, consumer electronics, cars and such and to old school when it comes to skateboards, tv-series or music formats.

Smash My iPod Up!

This link should keep you laughing for a minute or two. These guys have found a way to finance their strange hobby of smashing stuff, in this case ipods. This is what they have to say and they've got videos to prove it:

"After we collect $400 in donations, we will take that money to a local Apple Store. We will purchase the iPod, open it right inside the store, and destroy it right on the spot. The whole thing will be shot on film, and displayed on this site. This is only a social experiment, for the entertainment of the donors, and visitors of this site. "

Ipods are probably really over hyped, they've obviously lost their "glamour" as they've become so popular, but I think they're still pretty darn cool devices. I luv technology that is designed for the end user, not the engineer. And they're proven to be a true goldmine for Apple. Ipods have helped to create a Halo Effect to boost the sales of the whole Apple product line. Or have you seen an Apple computer ad in mass media lately? Nope, but ipod's are well represented all over.

Well I don't have an ipod myself, I have the other one. Which one is it? I could give you a hint: it's the second best selling mobile media player, with a market share of approximately 5 %. (I guess mobile phones are not counted in these statistics). Ok, try this link to find out what gagdet I'm carrying.
